EN 13030 ventilation louvers for underground Bangalore Metro

NABL-tested aluminium extruded louvers on the supply and exhaust ventilation shafts of six underground BMRCL stations — certified to EN 13030 with Class A water penetration.

Underground metro ventilation with louvered supply and exhaust shafts Schematic cross-section: a louvered supply shaft draws fresh air down to an underground station while a louvered exhaust shaft discharges vitiated air upward. Street-level louvers reject rain. Airflow directions are indicative, not measured. Street level Underground station / running tunnel Supply shaft Fresh air in Exhaust shaft Vitiated air out
How KBG's louvers are used: they cap the street-level supply and exhaust shafts that ventilate the underground station — passing air while rejecting rain. Schematic, not to scale.

The requirement

Underground metro stations rely on mechanical ventilation shafts that reach street level. Their openings must move large volumes of supply and exhaust air while keeping rain and weather out of the shaft — in the middle of a dense urban environment.

KBG's scope

KBG supplies aluminium extruded ventilation louvers for the supply and exhaust shafts across six underground stations. The louvers are tested at a NABL-accredited laboratory and certified to EN 13030, achieving Class A water-penetration effectiveness.

Delivered work

  • Supply-shaft louvers
  • Exhaust-shaft louvers
  • Extruded aluminium sections
  • Six-station rollout

Two jobs, one louver: pass air, reject rain

Each shaft opening has to do two opposing things at once — let ventilation air through freely, and stop rain from entering the shaft. The louver blade geometry is what makes both possible.

How a weather louver passes air while rejecting rain Angled blades let a horizontal airflow pass through the gaps toward the shaft, while wind-driven rain strikes the blade faces and drains down the outer side. Directions are indicative. Outside (weather) Shaft side Wind-driven rain Rain drains out Airflow through blades
Weather-louver principle. Blade angle and spacing set the balance between free area (airflow) and water rejection — the properties EN 13030 measures.
Supply Fresh air → station
Supply shaft — fresh air drawn down to the platform.
Exhaust Vitiated air → out
Exhaust shaft — vitiated / smoke-extract air discharged to street level.

Independently tested. Certified to EN 13030.

Rather than a claimed rating, the louvers were tested at a NABL-accredited laboratory to EN 13030 — the European standard for the weather performance of building louvres — so consultants can specify against a verified result.

EN 13030 rates a louvre's resistance to water penetration (Class A–D) and its air/pressure performance under controlled rain and airflow. Class A denotes the highest water-rejection effectiveness at the rated velocity.
