How tall should a highway noise barrier be?

Height is set by breaking the line of sight between traffic and the receiver — typically 3–6 m. A gap-free barrier delivers roughly 10–15 dB insertion loss; even a small open gap sharply cuts performance, so joints are sealed and posts designed to IS 875 wind load.

Which standards apply to noise barriers in India?

Highway barriers follow MoRTH specifications and IRC:SP:66 guidance, with acoustic material performance to IS 9901 and structural design to IS 875 (Part 3) for wind load.

Reflective or absorptive — which do I need?

Reflective panels (metal or transparent) are lower cost and suit open situations. Absorptive panels (perforated facing over a mineral-wool core) are used where reflected noise to the opposite side must be controlled, such as between carriageways or near dense housing.

Do you carry out a noise study before quoting?

Yes. We assess source levels, geometry and receiver locations to size the barrier for the target level, so the design is defensible to the authority.
